These are very misunderstood spirits. Reaper are looked at as causing death when really they are simply the messengers and accompany the newly dead to their next destination in the afterlife. They can be servants of any immortal of death or underwordld and are highly respected for their duties in the spiritual realm. They are said to often appear as skeletons dressed in tattered black robes carrying scythes or scales but in reality they have various appearences from that as mentioned to shadowy masses that have no defined facial features or ghoulish. All are skilled in necromancy, divination, astral projection, and banishing, getting rid of curses and sending that energy back to the one who sent it. Once in a while you might get feel something over your shoulder since they are lurkers far more than conversationalist but they have a way of letting you know they are around.
